Verizon Unveils 20GB Shared Data Plans for $150

Verizon Wireless recently announced a new top tier 20GB shared data plan that costs $150 per month. This new top tier joins the six data buckets that were unveiled with the Verizon Share Everything program in June. Original data plans range from 1GB for $50 a month to 10GB for $100 per month. Other plans include the 12GB, 14GB, 16GB, 18GB and 20GB. Up to 20GB can be purchased per month in advance.

With most customers using under 2GB a month, Verizon Wireless was not in a hurry to offer upper tiers together with the original six. The idea was to keep the program simple. Customers can simply log onto their ‘My Verizon’ web account to purchase more data if they will use more than 10GB of data.

In order to get 12GB, 14GB, 16GB, 18GB or 20GB data plans, customers will need to arrange with the customer service to get that allotment as part of a monthly plan. Exceeding a plan’s allowance results in a penalty of $15 per every 1GB of data exceeded. For example, if you purchased 10GB for $100 and you then used a total 20GB on that month, adding 10GB without arranging in advance, you will receive an overall charge of $250.

While one user would rarely need more than 20GB per month, the shared data plan allows up to 10 users, making it possible and viable to have a 20GB data plan. With many users already downloading high def full-length movies on their cells, it only takes seven users downloading a 3GB movie to exceed the 20GB data limit. The 20GB shared data plan thus seemed viable in such scenarios. Anyone using a smartphone, a tablet or other devices can access these shared data plans.

While AT&T’s shared plans are voluntary, Verizon Wireless requires new and upgrading customers to switch to the new Share Everything plans.
