On August 16, at 1 PM EDT we will be talking about whether or not Apple will become a telco. You can join the discussion here .
When we first posted about this discussion we had several industry experts saying that the acquisition or the development of MVNO strategy was imminent. Now it may be that it is tied to the iPhone 5, but I have my sincere doubts given the level of extraction that has been achieved by Apple on everyone from AT&T to Vodafone and even the prepaid market. It feels that Apple has the carrier market eating out of its hand much like the music and movie industries.
In talking with Dean Bubley and Martin Geddes of Future of Communications fame, they pondered the value of an MVNO strategy. Our friends at Tru (aka Truphone) have been doing well at executing a global MVNO strategy, but it would change the game considerably for Apple to do this. It would be like Apple giving up iTunes and becoming Apple Records. Additionally, the move to 4G is going to be a nightmare for Apple since LTE is going to require a Software Defined Radio to be a world phone. In our talk tomorrow I’m sure we will look for signs that Apple is either developing or buying an SDR solution.
Regardless of the AppleTel strategy, Apple fever is everywhere.
Aatma Studio has a special effects dream feature video on YouTube that has over 5M hits because everyone wants to see what’s next. However, the features being shown are not particularly logical and keeping with the Apple way.

What should we expect from the iPhone announcement? Well, strangely enough for a company that has evangelists, it will look like a liturgy.
