Verizon Wireless LTE Now Available to Over 75 Percent of U.S. Population

There's no doubt Verizon Wireless has been working hard to bring 4G LTE service to as many areas of the United States that it can. Practically every week, it seems the network operator has announced another roll out of its speedy data service.

As such, it's no surprise to learn that, by Verizon's estimates, it is offering 4G LTE to more than 75 percent of the U.S. population, a figure officially reached today with the roll out of 4G LTE in 34 new markets.

Verizon claims that its 4G LTE is the fastest 4G network in the U.S. with top speeds 10 times that of its 3G data. In real-world, fully loaded network environments, customers can expect average data rates of five to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and two to five Mbps on the uplink.

The provider also boasts a large number of devices – both smartphones and tablets – capable of taking advantage of 4G speeds. Verizon's HomeFusion Broadband in-home Internet service also allows households to take advantage of its wireless speeds.

“Our 4G LTE network is currently in more markets than all other U.S. wireless providers combined, and our team is continuing to expand the network so that more customers across the nation can take advantage of 4G LTE speed and capabilities,” said Nicola Palmer, chief technical officer of Verizon Wireless, in a statement. “We are ahead of schedule with our 4G LTE market roll out and will provide 4G LTE network coverage to more than 400 markets in the near future.”

This week, Verizon rolled out its 4G LTE service in south-eastern South Dakota, including the communities of Canton, Freeman, Parker, Viborg and Yankton, as well as the highways North of Yankton on US Highway 81 to Freeman; East of US Highway 81 on US Highway 18 and State Highway 44 to Interstate 29 and East from I-29 on US Highway 18 to the Iowa border.

The company also activated 38 fill-in cell sites in all five boroughs of Manhattan, as well as Nassau, Westchester, Suffolk and Rockland counties, expanding coverage into the New York Metro Region.
