RIM Confirms that Older Blackberry and Blackberry 10 Enterprise Devices Run on Different Servers

RIM has had its fair share of problems over the last few years and is hoping that the release of the Blackberry 10 can actually erase at least some of those struggles. The problem now appears to be that the company didn’t exactly make it easy for those who are using both an older version of a Blackberry device as well as the brand new Blackberry 10.

Enterprise companies who are going with Blackberry will actually have to run two different Blackberry Enterprise Servers at the same time if they want to be able to support their older devices as well as the brand new one.

RIM confirmed this odd little predicament on its company blog, where the company’s senior director, Jeff Holleran explained that companies looking to have the older and newer devices would need to run both BES 5 and BES 10.

“With the initial launch of BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, BES 5+ will require its own server, while BlackBerry Device Service and Universal Device Service can reside on separate servers or be combined on the same physical or virtual server,” Holleran wrote.

Adding, “Should you opt to work with virtual servers, we fully support this type of deployment. Today, BlackBerry Mobile Fusion operates in a similar fashion, with BES 5+ requiring one server, and both BDS and UDS able to be deployed on a single server or on separate servers.”

On occasion, it seems as if RIM simply does not understand the reasons why it is trailing so many other companies in the mobile device arena. There are very few IT managers who are going to want to have to deal with this kind of an issue when they already have other alternatives such as Microsoft’s enterprise servers to turn to. Running two simultaneous enterprise servers can be incredibly cost prohibitive. If RIM continues down this particular path, then it appears the company will have to shot themselves in the foot yet again.
