Samsung (News - Alert) has long hoped that its Galaxy S III would be able to keep it a long time competitor in the mobile device network. It appears that it has indeed been a big boon to the South Korean company.
The firm has just announced sales numbers covering the previous quarter and the Galaxy S III has apparently had more than 20 million handsets purchased over the last three months. These sales numbers mean that, while the Apple (News - Alert) iPhone 5 is expected to put a real dent into their market share, Samsung is still going to be having plenty of success in the smartphone market.

Smartphones are only getting more popular as we move along. While being able to surf the web on a mobile device has been something we’ve seen for quite some time, the sheer amount of web surfing, streaming audio and video has led to quite a few people leaning on their smartphones as one of their primary devices. That means means a large amount of data going back and forth, and also means that the smartphone market in general is even more competitive than it was before.
Samsung’s flagship smartphone was actually launching, using Google’s Android (News - Alert) OS, in Europe at the end of the Spring, giving the company some serious cushion between the launch of the device and the announcement of the iPhone 5. Nokia (News - Alert) and Motorola also fell behind when it came to rolling out their own new smartphones, and considering those two companies are also working with the Android OS, that it an even better edge.
Samsung says that the big time sales of the Galaxy S III have allowed the company to stay on top in the ultra competitive smartphone market.
According to at least one industry analysts, Samsung actually passed Apple when it comes to worldwide smartphone shipments last year. Not surprisingly, Apple is fighting this success any way it can. The two companies have been in legal battles for years and Apple recently claimed that the Galaxy S III is one of the phones that is “copycatting” the iPhone’s patents.
