Over 10 Million People Subscribe to NTT DOCOM's XI LTE Service

NTT DOCOMO, Inc. is the predominant mobile phone operator in Japan. The name DOCOMO is officially an abbreviation of the phrase “do communications over the mobile network.” It is also from a compound word dokomo which means “everywhere” in Japanese.

DOCOMO is a spinoff company from Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT). The merge took place in 1991 and was an effort to separate and take over NTT’s mobile phone operations.

Recently, in Tokyo, Japan, NTT DOCOMO, Inc. announced that subscribers to Xi, the company’s ultra-high-speed LTE mobile service, surpassed 10 million.

There is a meaning behind calling the product Xi. If you were to translate it into English, you would pronounce Xi as Crossy. According to NTT DOCOMO, the “X” symbolizes both connection and infinite possibility. The “I” denotes both individual user and innovation. The logo itself was designed to resemble the infinity symbol. It aligns the letters into a single stream to embody the bonds that organically link people, goods and information and lead to new innovations.

The Xi mobile service was first launched on December 24, 2010. It offers a maximum downlink of 100 Mbps. Since 2010, Xi has been growing in subscribers. It reached one million within a year. By 2012, it topped five million subscribers.

NTT DOCOMO still continues expanding its LTE coverage, as well as, raising data transmission speeds. It is looking to make downlink speeds of 112.5 Mbps available in 22 cities by March 2013. It will continue with its expansion plans by reaching more than 50 cities by June.

Currently, LTE base stations are offering 75 Mbps downlink speeds. This is double the speed in many locations. By March, the LTE base stations will amount to 4,000, this is expected to more than double in three months. NTT DOCOMO is predicting 10,000 by June. In addition, NTT DOCOMO is also planning on introducing 150 Mbps downlink speeds by March 2014, in effect doubling the current speed.

As you can see, NTT DOCOMO is unyielding in its efforts to continue enhancing their customer satisfaction. It currently has an extensive Xi device lineup and they keep working to increase and raise downlink speeds.
