Opera Teams with Samsung on Blu-Ray Players

Opera might be best known to some as a company that put out what was a pretty revolutionary browser when it was released. These days, the company is putting even more focus on coming up with applications and solutions for the entertainment tech industry.

On Tuesday, the company announced that its Opera Devices Software Development Kit (SDK) is being used on a line of 2013 Samsung Blu-Ray players, offering superior online video support for YouTube, BBC iPlayer and other web based applications.

This is hardly the first foray into the television and television compatible devices. The company has actually given pretty heavy attention to itsTV App store and it appears to be paying off as the company branches out. Boxee TV has even put the OperaSDK to work.

On the Samsung Blu-Ray DVD players, Opera is allowing people to not only find a way to watch their favorite movies on disc, but also help people see streaming video applications and YouTube through the Blu-Ray players themselves.

"Samsung has raised the bar for connected home entertainment products with the Opera Devices SDK," said Aneesh Rajaram, senior vice president of TV & Devices for Opera Software. "With best-in-class support for web and TV standards, plus unmatched rendering performance, the new Samsung Blu-ray players with popular web-based online video will make it even more tempting to stay on the couch."

By using this kind of technology, people can watch their favorite YouTube videos on a screen that is much larger than the average mobile device or laptop display. This is one of the ways that Opera is finding to keep itself relevant as technology moves forward. While the company may have fallen by the wayside when it came to web browsers, it is finding new and interesting ways to stay relevant in the tech world.
