The party is on. BYOD or “Bring Your Own Device” is a growing trend in most industries – especially trucking. Company-issued mobile devices are declining in numbers in favor of employees and drivers using their own devices with company-issued and approved software or networks.
What does BYOD mean in the trucking world? We believe that mobile compliance and performance data capture should be easy and efficient no matter who brings the device to the transportation party – the company or the individual driver. That’s the beauty of mobile. Drivers and fleet owners can share the benefits no matter who owns the device or pays the carrier for service.
Whether fleet-purchased tablets or devices owned by drivers, what matters is the data. It’s all about maintaining regulatory compliance while measuring a laundry list of performance factors that are needed to slash costs and run profitably – things such as fuel efficiency, hard braking, shift patterns, idle engine wear, trip reporting, speeding and much more. Trucking firms want compliance, safety and performance improvement, and we’re finding they want those things delivered via mobile technology. At XRS, we’re making sure mobile data capture can be accomplished on a variety of wireless carriers and on most devices (we’re at 50 and counting).
What will the future bring?
As BYOD becomes more prevalent, we believe the trucking compliance and performance mobile app should easily become part of a driver’s daily life, just like any other app for work or personal life. One mobile device makes it easy for a driver to maintain an efficient daily routine. For example, drivers use specialized apps to track Hours of Service and monitor DVIRs on the same device where they check email, handle banking, map out a route, find a good restaurant, check out news online, review Facebook, or conduct countless other activities.
It’s a BYOD party!
