Zend Survey: How Mobile App Developers Spend Their Time

PHP company Zend has announced the findings of its Zend Developer Pulse Survey, and those findings bring a couple of new insights in what is trending in the mobile application development world. It really shouldn’t be a surprise that the survey found that mobile apps are becoming the primary focus for development teams across the country. The survey found that as many as 91 percent of PHP developers say that they are working on those mobile applications.

Those findings show that the number of people who are working on those applications is up from 66 percent a year ago. The survey also showed that the developers have a good understanding of what the applications need in order to be as good as they can be. Among the developers surveyed, a huge majority said that they are working on open standards for these applications. Seventy-nine percent said that their focus for this mobile app development work is on applications that can leverage Web apps by using programming language like HTML5.

The survey also showed that with the massive growth in mobile devices, there is an expanded release schedule for those applications. These increased release schedules are also obviously leading to more work. The problem is that the work does not appear to be all that productive. Ninety percent of developers report that they are working weekends and holidays because production emergencies pop up. Those emergencies mean that there is less time spent on developing new features. Eighty percent of the people in the study said they spent just a quarter of the development time actually coming up with new builds, as opposed to 75 percent of their time fixing mistakes.

Zend CMO Elaine Lennox said in a statement to go along with the new survey findings, “Now that the PHP development community has confirmed its preference for developing mobile apps on open standards, it is time to adopt the tools and process that will enable teams to overcome the final remaining problem, which lies in the challenge of DevOps collaboration. Given the unprecedented popularity of PHP today, it’s no wonder that a growing number of developers are turning to Zend products, such as Zend Server, in both free and paid versions, to help them solve some of these challenges. We especially get great feedback from our user base that Zend Server can simplify application troubleshooting once an application is in production – clearly a key challenge and time waster for developers.”
