IBM Helps Vietnam Telco Make the Switch to a Cloud-based Mobile Platform

IBM recently put a number of its offerings to work — including IBM MobileFirst, IBM SmartCloud and IBM PureSystems —in Vietnam, servicing one of the country's top telecommunications companies, Vietnam Mobile Telecom Services Company (VMS). These offerings will help VMS to build an advanced, end-to-end mobile computing platform, allowing it to expand into new markets, enhance its enterprise application development capabilities and improve workforce productivity.

This collaboration with IBM is part of VMS' five-year IT strategy, led by subsidiary VMSII, which includes speeding up IT adoption through cloud computing, while using mobile technology to support business growth. As such, the primary objective of the strategy includes building an effective cloud ecosystem and value-added mobile services, while providing mobile platform as a service, infrastructure as a service and software as a service to VMS' partner and enterprise customers.

"VMS is the first organization in Vietnam to deploy an end-to-end mobile on cloud infrastructure based on IBM technology, and VMSII is privileged to be selected to pioneer this solution," said Mr. Nguyen Bao Long, deputy director of VMSII. "We will leverage the new mobile cloud infrastructure to streamline management of employees’ personal devices, quickly deliver value-added services and promotions to our customers and improve customer satisfaction."

A mobile cloud infrastructure will offer VMS greater scalability in terms of its IT infrastructure, allowing it to meet growing customer demand and support overseas expansion. The operator will also introduce new value-added services to its subscribers, such as advertising and promotional campaigns.

IBM's role in this will be to help in implementing hardware and backup infrastructure, while helping VMS migrate its computing platform to the cloud.

After the upgrade process is complete, VMS will be better connected to its employees, regardless of their chosen mobile device. This will promote employee mobility, increasing productivity. In support of this, VMS will deploy new mobile applications to its field personnel throughout Southern Vietnam.
