Lantiq DSLTE Provides 300 Mbps, Integrating DSL and LTE

Since U.S. consumer Internet access speeds have increased by an order of magnitude about every five years, all ISPs, on every platform, continually look for ways to boost access speeds.

Telcos adopting fiber to home access will boost speeds in the optical domain. Google and other ISPs are deploying fiber as well, with Google Fiber and others emphasizing their 1-Gbps services.

Cable operators will use DOCSIS 3.1 to boost their speeds as well, while satellite operators launch and activate higher-capacity satellites. Others may look to TV white spaces or other forms of leased spectrum.

Now Lantiq’s DSLTE technology combines a bonded VDSL2 broadband access link with an additional Long Term Evolution access link in a single residential gateway, an obvious attraction for service providers who own both fixed telephone networks and LTE mobile networks.

Lantiq says carriers combining mobile and fixed line network access can create one broadband pipe that reaches up to 300 Mbps aggregated data throughput.

In the past, some might have noted that the ability to bond wire pairs to boost digital subscriber line bandwidth was subject to interference issues and the physical availability of spare wires not in use.

Of course, since consumers are abandoning voice service that frees up wire pairs, allowing telcos to bond wire pairs to provide more bandwidth, where copper access networks remain in place.

Of course, telcos also can use shorter loops, pair bonding or vectoring to boost bandwidth. Using VDSL2, bandwidths in real-world networks should routinely reach 60 Mbps, with a 90-Mbps minimum on loops with good quality copper and reasonable lengths.

KPN, Belgacom, Deutsche Telekom and AT&T are some of the service providers with announced VDSL2 upgrades.  AT&T has said the new approach will increase downstream Internet speeds to up to 75 Mbps.
