SDG Systems Increases its Offerings for Android and Linux

SDG Systems, a provider of operating system (OS) porting to rugged mobile devices, recently announced that it has added additional services to its repertoire. Among the services the company is now offering are mobile application development and porting and OS customization, with all these services being available for both Android and Linux.

OS and app porting are important when dealing with rugged mobile devices because these devices typically have additional features that aren’t included in typical mobile devices. By adapting an OS or app to a rugged device, end users are given the ability to utilize its special features, such as barcode scanning or enhanced GPS capabilities.

SDG Systems’ move to support application porting and development comes as a direct result of clients requesting Android systems on their devices. Todd Blumer, president of SDG Systems, said in a statement, “With confusion and delays related to the Microsoft mobile roadmap and a user interface that many find clunky, an increasing number of enterprise clients are contacting us to implement their applications on Android. Android has a modern user interface and is becoming ubiquitous.”

One of the company’s latest projects has been putting Android 4.1, also known as “Jelly Bean,” on the Trimble Juno T41 rugged mobile computer. SDG Systems has been working with Trimble for some time, as evidenced by a project last year where they put Linux on Trimble’s Yuma tablet.

Perhaps one of the reasons that SDG’s relationships with its clients tends to last is its attitude and unique payment options. According to the company’s president, SDG Systems teams act as an extension of the clients they’re working with, not just developers for hire. Additionally, the company offers both fee-based development and a model where there is a low up-front cost followed by revenue sharing later down the road.
