Mobile Gateway Application Could Make Roaming Charges a Thing of the Past

Roaming charges – the portion of the wireless bill everyone dreads when they look at their monthly statement. Depending where you are when you make a call or use data services, the rates can be outrageously expensive.

The European Union passed roaming regulations in July of this year to cut prices by more than 30 percent for using the Internet abroad. On September 11, 2013, the EU will propose a new law to merge the European telecom market into a single market by 2016, thereby eliminating roaming charges throughout. This option is not available in the United States, but the Mobile Gateway Application fromVoip-Pal.com Inc. will give users a alternative tool for eliminating mobile roaming charges.

The company received a patent application in August of this year for what it believes will be a disruptive technology that will change how the mobile industry assesses this part of their service. With more than $45 billion going to the coffers of the telecoms from roaming charges, any technology that lowers this amount will be met with strong disapproval from the industry. Yet, the technology can also be used by mobile service providers to offer a new tier of service that uses Mobile Gateway to provide affordable rates when consumers are no longer within their calling area.

The Mobile Gateway technology changes every international long distance telephone call into a local call. The application runs on the smartphone in the background without having to change foreign SIM cards or buy calling plans for international travel.

"Mobile operators, using VoIP’s Mobile Gateway and related technology, can now regain control of VoIP Internet traffic that was lost to such competitors as Skype, Vonage, Google and Truephone, which enabled subscribers to obtain free international calling. Mobile operators that choose VoIP patented technology can create their own low cost, billable, full service, quality Internet telephony over defined Internet routes that meet Telco regulations," said Dr. Thomas Sawyer, chairman and CEO of Voip-Pal.

Voip-Pal.com is a player in the broadband Voice-over-Internet Protocol (“VoIP”) market, owning and developing several VoIP patent applications. This includes Law Intercept (LI) Technology used to intercept a VoIP conversation under absolute stealth mode for law enforcement agencies. The company provides VoIP telephone services for cell phones, smartphones, and tablets, giving these portable platforms access to an affordable communications solution.
