FCC Approval for Nokia Tablet with AT&T and Verizon LTE

It would seem that although new from earlier this month that Microsoft might possibly buy Nokia’s phone business and license its patents, Nokia hasn’t been sitting around waiting. Nokia may be testing a Windows device powered by a Snapdragon 800.

There have been rumors of a device called the RX-114 running around since early July. Apparently, Nokia submitted a 167 page document to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for approval. I’m not one to read even one or two pages of a document like that and it seems that Nokia was hoping for just that.

Throughout the document you would be reading about a mystery device called the RX-114. The Nokia team dressed up the paperwork in such a way that it really hides all ideas of what this device might actually be.

There are 166 pages of measurements and technical graphs. There is one page that mentions a “slate-like” device. That along with the following diagrams leads to the conclusion that this is indeed a tablet.

It is quite possible that while the diagrams and FCC documentation refers to the RX-114 we are really looking at the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet. There were a couple of times when RX-114 was followed by Nokia tablet. The one main problem with this device is that it may be a Windows RT based tablet.

Another reason to think that this device may be a tablet is that according to the listing, the display resolution is 1371 x 771 pixels. The screen size of the Microsoft Surface RT is 1366 x 768 pixels. They do seem to be a close enough.

Of course, if this is a Windows RT based device, Nokia has to know that Windows RT tablets are selling poorly. Since Nokia is focusing on Windows 8 phones, perhaps they will have a change of heart and the RX-114 or Lumia 2520 will be a Windows 8 tablet.

What I can tell you about this device, which the FCC document confirms is that it will feature LTE with support for bands 2, 4, 5, 13 and 17. In addition, it will have a full suite of HSPA+ and GSM / EDGE. In essence, this means that the frequencies supported in its radio will work on AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

Some of the leaks concerning this possible device have shown pictures with “big red” branding. That could give you an indication of where this device could show up, if in fact, there is a device to show up.

Nokia is holding an event that is being called “Innovation Reinvented” in Abu Dhabi on October 22, 2013. Sources who are close to Nokia commented on the fact that the company is preparing to unveil a total of six devices.

At least two of these devices are going to be new Lumias. Could the RX-114, or the Lumia 2520 be one of those devices? Nokia has been slowing letting some information about the event out.

Unfortunately, all that I can tell you for sure is that it will be held on October 22. It will be interesting to see what information comes to light at that time.
