Key Bridge TV White Space System Gets FCC Approval

Key Bridge Global has made its TV White Space System commercially available following its certification by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The solution offers access to shared spectrum and administration throughout the United States and territories.

“Our development team deserves all the credit, they worked very hard for a very long time to get us to this point,” said Jesse Caulfield, president of Key Bridge, in a statement. “We are also grateful to our many friends and industry partners who provided myriad helpful suggestions and improvements to deliver a higher quality service offering. We recognize that FCC certification is just the beginning, and with this important milestone behind us we intend to keep up if not increase our pace of innovation in this field.”

The Key Bridge White Space Portal allows for the exploration of one’s local wireless environment by way of a comprehensive suite of rich Internet applications. It also helps users gain a better understanding of unlicensed operation on the Television white space frequencies, which range from 54 to 698 MHz and are subject to geographic and schedule availability.

Television white spaces are frequency bands that were once occupied by TV broadcasts but are now freed up by the move to digital television. They are considered ideal for supporting both mobile broadband and M2M communications especially due to their propagation attributes, most notably the ability to travel over long distances and penetrate obstacles more easily than technologies based on higher frequencies.

Google also has a TV white space database which received FCC approval back in July. Telcordia, developer of mobile, broadband and enterprise communications software and services, has also been working on a TV white space database since late 2011.

With Key Bridge’s White Space Portal, meanwhile, is said to offer an efficient, streamlined and secure work flow for enabling the registration of wireless services and facilities.
