Thanksgiving Weekend Proved Strong for Digital Marketing, Smartphone Sales Increase Exponentially

A recent report from digital marketing firm IgnitionOne says digital marketing proved to be a success for Thanksgiving weekend, as there was a tremendous increase in both smartphones and tablets.

Smartphones in particular saw a 542 percent increase year-over-year (YoY) during the entire weekend, with a 1000 percent growth on Thanksgiving Day. The advertisers driving the sales saw an increase of 40 percent for impressions compared to the Thanksgiving shopping weekend in 2012.

While a lot of emphasis has always been on Black Friday sales, IgnitionOne reported the biggest increase in paid search spending for Thanksgiving Day, proving that Thanksgiving is growing significantly more important for online retail in the mobile device market.

"Online advertisers are shifting tactics to meet consumer demand – resulting in increased messaging across mobile devices and adding Thanksgiving Day as a major shopping day," said Roger Barnett, President of IgnitionOne in a statement. "With a shortened holiday shopping season in 2013, this past weekend resulted in impressive growth for digital marketing that will help push through to a strong overall Q4."

Smartphones have many advantages, which make them far more popular than traditional cellular phones. Modern smartphones have increased data capacity and wireless network access, which allow users to surf online in many parts of the country. The mobile Web makes it possible for anyone to check webpages, regardless of location. Nowadays, you can easily update information or message on your blog or Twitter without using computers, and business professionals no longer need to be tied to their desks to perform their jobs. Smartphones, in a way, have become a societal norm.

The statistics for mobile device sales are hardly surprising. The market could taper off as more people find themselves armed with a smartphone, but with the big makers like Android and Apple consistently putting out new devices, it is safe to assume that sales can expect to increase consistently over time.

The digital marketing figures are released quarterly by IgnitionOne, which manages more than $1.5 billion in online advertising.
