Mobility Techzone Week in Review

As we wind down the holidays, let’s look at the latest headlines that happened in mobility.

Recent data says that 38 percent of U.S. households used mobile phones exclusively for voice communications, and surprisingly, this comes from the CDC. At the rate of mobile growth, it’s looking like U.S. households will be mobile-only, and that number is looking like 42 percent.

Certain states are already mostly mobile, states like Idaho and Mississippi. So, what does this mean for the mobile competition? Landline competition?

AT&T, one of the largest phone service providers in Michigan, wishes to streamline the process to phase out traditional landline service and go to wireless or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service, mostly because maintaining both traditional and newer systems is cost prohibitive.

The FCC feels the residential voice market is strictly between telephone and cable companies, however, with the phasing out of landline systems and increase in mobile usage, that seems unlikely.

Apple made unfavorable headlines as the company incurred fines over a violation, specifically article 18 of the Fair Trade Act in Taiwan by requiring the three main service providers in the country—Chunghwa Telecom, Far Eastone Telecommunication and Taiwan Mobile--to sell iPhones at certain prices.

According to the report, the fine came as a result of Apple's interference with area mobile service providers, as well as handset distributors, in terms of pricing.

Will this set Apple back in terms of cash flow? Unlikely. Read the analysis from the report on how Apple will fare with this setback.

Ever wonder how much data your apps will use? There’s a website for that. CTIA unveiled a new website that shows how much data smartphone and tablets are using from popular apps. The website, KnowMyApp.org, shows users the monthly average megabyte usage, and it also shows you how it impacts usage on various data plans and what you can expect from each.

The tool was developed through the CTIA’s Application Data Usage Working Group.
