AeroMexico Becomes First Latin American Airline with On-Board Wi-Fi

Mexican airline AeroMexico will be the first airline in Latin America to offer in-flight Wi-Fi after announcing its new partnership with Panasonic Avionics Corporation, a subsidiary of Panasonic.

The partnership will see the airline deploy Panasonic’s Ku-band satellite service to nine of its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircrafts, providing passengers with Wi-Fi access on-board. Ku-band is the only network of its kind dedicated to aviation.

Panasonic will have a strong presence inside each of the planes too, installing HD screens and touchscreens in economy and business class seating. AeroMexico will even be offering Panasonic apps for passengers to use on-board for planning their journeys upon arrival as well as Panasonic’s SeatChat platform, which allows passengers to communicate with each other throughout the cabin.

“We are thrilled that AeroMexico has chosen Panasonic to provide such an exciting and strategic service.  Their passengers can now expect an incredible entertainment experience and broadband Wi-Fi everywhere these aircraft fly,” said Paul Margis, Panasonic Avionics CEO, in a statement.

“This exciting development underlines our commitment to provide the very best service to our customers with the very best technology, on board the best aircraft with the finest crew,” added AeroMexico CEO, Andres Conesa. “We are delighted to further extend our partnership with Panasonic.”

Panasonic Avionics develops in-flight entertainment and communications systems. AeroMexico, which services North America and a select number of European and Asian routes, has not commented on whether or not it plans to install Wi-Fi systems in more of its aircraft fleet in the near future.

Nevertheless, this makes AeroMexico the first airline in the Latin American market to roll out on-board Wi-Fi. The other major Mexican air carrier is Mexicana Airlines, who has not made any announcement recently regarding providing Wi-Fi to passengers.
