Study Shows How Dedicated Short-Range Communication Can Increase Road Safety

Each year car accidents account for millions of injuries and deaths across the United States. A new study from market strategy consultancy iGR examines how Dedicated Short-Range Communication can be used to help reduce these accidents and thus make way for safer roads.

DSRC is described as "a fast, short-to-mid range, two-way wireless technology" that enables vehicles to communicate with one another at an information exchange rate of 10 times per second and allows both the vehicle and the driver to be more aware of their surroundings. It features low latency and a high data transmission speed, which lends itself to situations where information is needed quickly, such when a driver needs to be alerted of an oncoming vehicle.

The iGR study analyzes everything including how DSRC can be utilized for vehicle safety applications, the types of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure DSRC allows for, the business and spectrum challenges vehicle communication technologies overcome, the benefits of using the technology, how the government tests DSRC and when mandates are expected, and the cost to deploy DSRC in both the US and Europe.

The information presented in the report is said to be valuable to automotive manufactures and suppliers, M2M providers, technology and ITS vendors, infrastructure providers, mobile device OEMs, mobile service providers, and financial/investment analysts.

Currently there are no mandates for a DSRC rollout in the nation, and while there are many unanswered questions about funding and deployment, President and Founder of iGR, Iain Gillott, said DSRC offers considerable possibilities in the areas of safety and infrastructure.

"In recent testing, this technology has shown great potential for increasing driver safety, and it presents a significant opportunity for the wireless and mobile industry -- tens of billions of dollars in new infrastructure," Gillott said in a statement.
