Cobra Electronics Brings Music to the Great Outdoors

Once Bluetooth speakers caught on, it became progressively clearer how convenient they are and it was inevitable that the range of options would diversify (plus they’ll be even more useful when Apple does away with headphone jacks). On July 8 Cobra Electronics announced their latest offering in this segment, promising to be compact, water- and shock-proof.

Called the AirWave Box, the rugged speaker is marketed as the perfect stereo for outdoor use, overcoming situations that are usually dangerous for electronics. It is guaranteed to be fully submersible in up to a meter of water for at least 30 minutes. It even floats, so there is minimal chance of water damaging the speaker in any way unless it is purposefully submerged beyond its limit. Yes, this also means it can be brought in the shower without issue.

In addition to its shock absorbent casing, the speaker is fully dirt-proof which protects it from essentially any mild incidents that may arise while adventuring, even if it’s dropped or subjected to harsh elements. Playback time lasts up to ten hours, and the battery can last up to 120 hours in standby mode.

Bluetooth technology allows the speaker to be used as an HD hands-free speakerphone and microphone, accounting for calls that may arise during music listening with minimal inconvenience. Users can control it with their mobile device from up to thirty feet away.

In addition to the AirWave Box, Cobra offers the Airwave Mini, which retains the same battery life and rugged construction but with less sound output and a smaller size. The Airwave is the most basic version and is much more susceptible to the elements, while the Airwave 360 is a more powerful surround sound version.

The Airwave Box comes at a price of $79.95, and the company’s entire series of Bluetooth speakers is available on Cobra’s website as well as from major online retailers.
