Microsoft Slashes $100 Off Surface 2 Prices

A limited time offer from Microsoft has introduced a severe price cut of $100 to all three models in its Surface 2 lineup. This is timed perfectly for back-to-school season, but varying watchful eyes think it may be the sign of an upcoming new model or even a discontinuation of the product line.

The cheapest unit with 32 GB of internal storage capacity is now being offered for $349, the 64GB unit for $449 and the 64GB unit with integrated 4G LTE for $579. This is not including the optional keyboard option, which is almost universally chosen for an additional cost of $120 for the Touch cover and $130 for the Type cover.

Considering the surprise release of the Surface Pro 3 in May, it’s possible that Microsoft is trying to move some inventory off the shelves before that model falls too far behind into obscurity. If this was the case it would make marketing sense to masquerade that activity as a back-to-school sale, which it very well could be seeing as the offer is slated to end Sept. 27.

Many users have lodged complaints against Microsoft tablets, especially regarding the limitations of the Windows RT operating system. Although hardware specifications are on par with competition, Microsoft tablets have notoriously been incompatible with all Windows legacy applications and can only run apps from the severely limited Windows Store. Unless the company has plans to solve this problem in the near future, it may in fact be in its best interest to discontinue tablet production and focus on software. Rapid clearance of stock could be a possible indicator of that.

Rumors abound that Microsoft is planning a large press even this fall to offer the public a preview of Windows 9, and other whispers throughout the summer hint at the possibility of a Surface 3 announcement around the same time. If true, this information would be made public around the time that the promotional period for the Surface 2 comes to an end, after which interest in the model will presumably drop substantially.

Therefore these price cuts could be anything from the sign of a dying model line to an indicator of an exciting upcoming announcement. Only time will tell, but for those interested now would be the best time to pick up a Surface 2 while this offer lasts.
