TeliaSonera Earns License in 1800 MHz Band in Sweden for 4G Expansion

TeliaSonera, a provider of network access and telecommunication services, announced it is investing in more nationwide frequencies in the 1800 MHz band on the Swedish market.

The company plans to use the new frequencies for the ongoing build-out of Sweden’s largest 4G network and for strengthening the nationwide mobile telephony network, company officials said.

The company is already using part of the 1800 MHz band in Sweden for nationwide mobile telephony services in the 2G network. In addition to the existing 10 MHz, TeliaSonera now also has the acquired 2x25 MHz in the 1800 MHz frequency band.

The new frequencies will provide customers with even more bandwidth for their surf needs in the 4G network at the same time that the nationwide mobile telephony network is strengthened, company officials said.

TeliaSonera’s investment plans were revealed after the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) announced the result of the license auction. The licenses granted now for the 1800 MHz band are valid for 25 years starting from 2013. The costs for the new frequency blocks in total are SEK 920 million. The payment to PTS will be made during the fourth quarter of 2011.

Company officials said the frequency blocks now acquired in the 1800 MHz frequency band are not subject to any conditions related to construction pace or population coverage in Sweden.

During summer 2011, TeliaSonera’s subsidiary Yoigo also acquired frequencies in the 1800 MHz band to be used for 4G services in Spain.

Earlier this year, TeliaSonera announced it has been granted license in the 800 MHz band. The license, valid for 25 years, cost SEK 854 million for frequency blocks of 2x10 MHz in the 800 MHz frequency band. This investment again was aimed at expanding 4G services.
