On TV: 'Alice' takes on Wonderland

Dec 03, 2009 (Tulsa World - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Syfy's new miniseries "Alice" takes the heart of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" and transforms it into a modern-day tale of a martial-arts instructor with commitment issues who ends up on the other side of a looking glass.

When her boyfriend proposes and offers her a fantastic heirloom ring, Alice Hamilton (Caterina Scorsone) sends him away -- straight into the arms of a mysterious gang of dapperly dressed men known as the Suits. Apparently, their plan all along was to kidnap Jack and get the ring known as the Stone of Wonderland.

When Alice follows them through a mirrored portal, she winds up in a universe where the Suits, led by White Rabbit, bring the kidnapped people, aka, the Oysters, to have their memories erased and then live in a casino where everyone is a winner. The high emotions generated by gambling are bottled for the consumption of Wonderland, a place ruled by the Queen of Hearts (Kathy Bates) and her husband, the King of Hearts (Colm Meaney).

To get him back, Alice has to enlist the aid of resistance fighter Hatter (Andrew Lee Potts), resistance leader Dodo (Tim Curry) and the White Knight (Matthew Frewer). Likewise, the Queen sends Mad March and 10 of Clubs to find Alice and get the ring -- at all costs.

Harry Dean Stanton also guest-stars as Caterpillar.
