60-second review | Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security System

Dec 22, 2009 (The Miami Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Product: Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security System.

Features: This PC-based do-it-yourself master system comes with one indoor camera, but it can manage up to six indoor and outdoor cameras, sold separately. It detects motion and will send multimedia-rich alerts to the user's e-mail accounts and phones. Users can also log onto a website to see a live view. Records video to your hard drive, and depending on how much memory you allocate, it will delete the oldest files when it starts to run out of room.

Price: $299.

Ups: It's super easy to install and program. It comes with several ways to mount your camera, and you don't have to constantly monitor how much memory you're using.

If you sent up a motion alert, it can send you video clips in e-mail or text message (only Windows Mobile phones will be able to see the video clips). It can also send a photo snapshot when the motion was detected.

Downs: You have to adjust the focus by hand, and if you want to pan, tilt or zoom remotely, you'll need to pay a yearly subscription of $79.95. This also lets you store the videos on a remote server.

Be aware that you'll need some light in the room to be able to see anything. The computer and program have to be turned on for it to work -- so it makes more sense to connect this with a stationary PC rather than a laptop.

Bottom line: There are other security systems that will do a little more if you're willing to pay a subscription fee, like AT&T's Remote Monitor, but this is pretty good for a bare-bones security camera.
