Alabama Republicans Applaud GOP Leadership's recommendation of Parker Griffith for Energy & Commerce Committee
Feb 08, 2010 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) --
WASHINGTON - The members of Alabama's Republican congressional delegation today made the following statements on Congressman Parker Griffith's recommendation by the Republican Steering Committee for an appointment to the powerful House Committee on Energy and Commerce, making him the only freshman member of the entire House of Representatives to be appointed to this Committee.
Once appointed, Dr. Griffith will be the only member of the Alabama House delegation on the committee and is the first congressman from the state to serve on the panel in almost two decades. The most recent Alabama House members to serve on the Energy and Commerce Committee were Rep. Claude Harris (D-AL), who served on the Committee from 1991-1992 and Rep. Sonny Callahan (R-AL), who served on the Committee from 1987-1992. Since 1947, there has only been one Republican Alabama Congressman to serve on the committee until now.
Congressman Spencer Bachus (AL-06), a member of the Steering Committee said, "Congressman Griffith will provide Alabama with a strong voice on a committee which deals with issues vital to the people of our state. Our delegation looks forward to working with him as he assumes this important responsibility."
Congressman Robert Aderholt (AL-04) said, "Congressman Parker Griffith's appointment recommendation to the Energy and Commerce Committee is actually a great win and a great fit for North Alabama. Congressman Griffith is a medical doctor and this committee has jurisdiction over health care. In addition, our nation needs common sense energy policies right now to use hydropower, clean coal, nuclear, natural gas and oil, and this will position Parker Griffith to work on these matters and reject flawed energy policies like Cap & Trade. North Alabama is also on the cutting edge of technological growth as it houses the Tennessee Valley Authority, missile defense facilities and Decatur's Robotics Plant - all areas covered by this Committee."
Congressman Jo Bonner (AL-01) said, "The recommendation of Parker Griffith to serve on the House Energy and Commerce Committee is a tremendous positive for Alabama and the people of the Tennessee Valley. Energy and Commerce is one of the most influential committees in the House, with direct jurisdiction over a wide range of critical issues impacting our country from national energy policy to health care. More than half the legislation that passes the House comes through the Energy and Commerce Committee. Alabama has not had a voice on Energy and Commerce since my predecessor, Congressman Sonny Callahan, R-Mobile, and Congressman Claude Harris, D-Tuscaloosa served together on the committee in 1992. Energy research and development, communications technology, trade and health care are all areas in which Alabama will have a strong voice with Parker Griffith on the committee."
Congressman Mike Rogers (AL-03) said, "It is great news that after 18 years Alabama will again have a seat at the table on this top House Committee, and know this assignment will help Parker to continue being a strong advocate for the best interests of the folks of the Fifth District and the entire state."
The Energy and Commerce Committee is one of the three most important of all the standing committees in the U.S. House of Representatives, because it has one of the broadest and most significant jurisdictions of any committee. The Committee provides legislative oversight for promotion of commerce, public health, energy and technology. The jurisdiction extends over five Cabinet-level departments and seven independent agencies--from the Department of Energy, Health and Human Services, the Transportation Department to the Federal Trade Commission, Food and Drug Administration, Federal Communications Commission, among others.
