HAGAN ANNOUNCES $240K GRANT FOR MITCHELL COUNTY PUBLIC COMPUTERS, WIRELESS INTERNET

Mar 04, 2010 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Kay R. Hagan (D-NC) today announced that the Mitchell County Historic Courthouse Foundation will receive a $239,194 Stimulus grant for a new public computer center, providing the community with a place for job training and educational opportunities.

"Mitchell County's new public computer center will be a terrific resource for the area," said Hagan. "The workstations will be available for job training and education, and the Virtual Learning and Communications Center will be able to serve over 300 users per week. By bringing these individuals online, the Center can make a new world of resources available to its users." Today's grant comes from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA)'s Broadband Technologies Opportunities Program (BTOP). It will pay for building-wide wireless Internet, new laptops for general public use and a mobile teleconferencing system that will be available to municipal leaders and small business owners. The wireless Internet will also serve three classrooms that offer GED and two-year degree programs in conjunction with Mayland Community College.

The Mitchell County Historical Courthouse Foundation is a non-profit that works to improve overall quality of life for Mitchell County residents through education, historic preservation and community development.

Hagan crafted the Stimulus with her Senate colleagues to create jobs and boost the economy.
