BRIEF: Empire to receive wireless service: $20,000 grant awarded to the downtown area

EMPIRE, Aug 26, 2010 (The Record-Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A $20,000 grant will be used to establish wireless Internet service in downtown Empire.

The Northwest Michigan Council of Governments and Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce awarded the grant to village officials Tuesday. It will be used for engineering and equipment costs to establish Wi-Fi service in the city's downtown district including Front Street, at the village beach along Lake Michigan and at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center along M-72.

The grant is through the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which awarded $200,000 to the Council of Governments to distribute "community growth" grants throughout the six-county region. Six other local grants will be awarded by COG and the chamber in the near future, officials said.

Rob Franzo, of Mitten Communications LLC, a consultant working with village officials on the project, said equipment installation is planned for late this year or in early 2011. A committee to oversee the implementation includes village planning commission Chairman Paul Skinner, planning commissioner Jared Volz and village trustee David Diller.
