Toshiba’s Digital Products Division, a division of Toshiba (News - Alert) America Information Systems, introduced two 4G Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access or “WiMAX”-ready models of the Portégé R700.

The Portégé R700, according to company officials, is the world’s lightest 13.3-inch full-performance ultraportable laptop featuring an integrated DVD drive.

The new model provides business users with unprecedented performance and durability in a highly mobile form factor and is the most comprehensive connectivity options available, Toshiba officials added.

Carl Pinto, vice president of product development for Toshiba America Information Systems, Digital Products Division, said, “4G WiMAX (News - Alert) coverage continues to rapidly grow and offers millions of people wireless access in many major metropolitan areas across the U.S.”

Currently, WiMAX is available in 54 cities nationwide and by the end of 2010 it is expected to be available in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Minneapolis, New York and Pittsburgh.

Pinto said, “Now with a WiMAX-enabled Portégé R700, Toshiba business professionals will be able to enjoy the benefits of having citywide connectivity at their fingertips.”

The Portégé R700 has a starting weight of just three pounds and its thickness is one inch. It supports the latest Intel (News - Alert) Core family of full-powered processors and a wealth of features and ports required by business users.

The laptop has the ability to dock to a port replicator, an ExpressCard slot, an eSATA or USB combo port with Sleep-and-Charge. It also features a built-in DVD SuperMulti drive and Webcam. A high-capacity six-cell battery with a long battery life rating is also provided.

The Portégé R700-S1332W features the Intel Core i7 processor and a 128GB solid state drive, while the Portégé R700-S1322W features the Intel Core i5 processor and a 320GB high-speed 7200 RPM hard drive. Both include 4GB of DDR3 memory, company officials said.

The Portégé R700 is light, yet features durable magnesium alloy casing reinforced with a honeycomb rib design.

It has diagonal HD widescreen LED-backlit display10, a premium raised tile keyboard and a wide TouchPad with customizable Multi-touch Control, which makes typing and navigation easy and comfortable, according to officials at Toshiba.
