A major Canadian oil production and distribution company has
reportedly deployed
Vecima Networks’s
3.5 GHz VistaMAX WiMAX Solution in order to enhance its ability to monitor as well as control its distributed production systems on site. The name of the Canadian customer was not disclosed.
According to a press release, the oil producer utilized company’s VistaMAX series of WiMAX (

Apart from monitoring and controlling the distributed production systems, the Canadian oil producer was also able to install other facilities such as video surveillance, high-speed data links, and a multi-mode portable communication link with both WiMAX and Wi-Fi access, with the help of Vecima’s (

Vecima Networks’ VistaMAX system’s architecture utilizes highly integrated single box base stations (BS) and subscriber stations (SS) as the network elements. These VistaMAX products are currently available for 1.9, 3.5, 3.65 and 5 GHz. Moreover, the system’s network architecture is based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard and WiMAX Forum (

Apart from featuring non line-of-sight connectivity, VistaMAX systems, in general, also feature time division duplexing (TDD) for maximum spectral efficiency and provides full quality-of-service (QoS) to support real-time services.
The
3.5 GHz VistaMAX base station is a self-contained all-outdoor base station that can be configured with an integrated antenna (60, 90 or 120 degree) or with an external antenna connector - to allow for omni-directional configurations. The base station is integrated with all MAC, baseband modulation and radio functionality, and it requires single Ethernet cable for power and data, according to Vecima.
In the release, Surinder Kumar, chairman and CEO of Vecima, said "VistaMAX offers a cost effective solution for delivering wireless broadband data and will serve many applications, including collecting remote office data and increasing security for well sites and personnel through real time video surveillance and communication. Reductions in operating costs will increase efficiency and minimize downtime. We are pleased to have entered into the unique vertical industry of oil and gas and to be working with a leading oil company."
Moreover, Vecima’s 3.5 GHz VistaMAX base station and customer access equipments deployed by the Canadian oil producer are based on the IEEE (

The Canadian oil producer started this full-scale deployment earlier in 2009. It has also contracted Vecima, through its YourLink Wireless division, to construct an initial 7 tower locations plus additional radio installations on existing towers. Additional 10 new locations will be added by first half of 2010.
Additionally, Vecima has also received purchase orders aggregating approximately $1.5 million from this customer and this entire multi-million dollar deployment is expected to take approximately 3 years.
Vecima's Wireless Applications and Engineering Support Team, and YourLink, Vecima's wireless ISP provider in Western Canada, will be providing operations support, inspection and maintenance to the Canadian customer.
