Runcom, a provider of OFDMA based end-to-end WiMAX (News - Alert) solutions, has announced that its Pico + Base Station unit has successfully completed the process of the WiMAX Forum Wave-2 certification.

As a WiMAX Forum certified product, the Runcom (News - Alert) Pico Base Station unit successfully passed conformance testing and interoperability testing. Now, the product is complaint with WiMAX forum requirements for mobile, broadband, wireless and metropolitan access networks.

According to Runcom, its Pico BS is a Base Station product that integrates advance technologies in a compact all-in-one single outdoor unit that optimizes the OPEX (News - Alert) performance. This IEEE802.16e-2005 compatible equipment features advanced RF technology and integrates up to four antennas with effective beam-forming techniques. The RF band ranges include 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz, and 3.5GHz.

The Runcom Pico Base Station unit encompasses a smart antenna MIMO array of 2x2 or 4x2 (Matrix A & Matrix B), in order to improve its coverage and penetration performance. This reduces the required number of sites requisition to provide high-quality performance for a given area. Consequently, this helps in significant OPEX and CAPEX savings.

According to officials with Runcom, the company’s Pico BS unit performs all the required capabilities of the Mobile BS next generation including WiMAX Modem PHY and MAC functions and SNMP based management protocol. It also completely supports the interoperable R6 reference point for interworking with ASN Gateways either in a distributed or centralized network configuration.

In addition, the compact form factor Pico BS unit supports up to 20MHz bandwidth (5/10/20MHz channel size - 2x5MHz, 2x10MHz and 1x20MHz). This LTE (News - Alert) upgradable unit features unique dual sector mode as well.

The WiMAX Forum provides a common platform for certification of interoperable high performance IP-based broadband wireless equipments that support stationary, portable, and mobile applications.

According to WiMAX Forum, the certification will promote interoperability and mass production that will consequently help in lowering the price and ensure a widespread adoption of WIMAX Forum Certified equipment.

In order to earn official WiMAX certification, the equipment that generally includes the base station and the subscriber unit must demonstrate both conformance and interoperability. Conformance makes sure that the broadband wireless equipment is compliant with the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.16-2005 and ETSI HiperMAN standards and also supports the profiles set by the WiMAX Forum. Interoperability makes sure that the compliant equipment is interoperable with all other standardized equipments.

Runcom offers its OFDMA based WiMAX solutions to system integrators, operators, license holders and Internet service providers.
