WIND Telecom S.A., a broadband Internet and subscription television service provider in the Dominican Republic, has selected the Aptilo Networks’ WiMAX CSN System to support their migration of WiMAX services to radio equipment from Samsung (News - Alert) Electronics.

Officials with Aptilo said that the company’s WiMAX CSN System has successfully enabled WIND Telecom's existing WiMAX 16e network, which uses Nortel equipment, since 2007.

According to company officials, WIND Telecom is now using WiMAX (News - Alert) 16e devices, base stations and ASN Gateways from Samsung Electronics for their expansion in the capital city of Santo Domingo and in Santiago, the second largest city in the country.

WIND Telecom plans to expand coverage to other cities gradually. Onset of facilities and network deployment began in the second quarter of 2010.

Company officials said that the new Samsung-enabled network will use Aptilo's WiMAX AAA+, Policy Control, Prepaid and Hotlining functionalities based on the latest WiMAX Forum (News - Alert) NWG standard.

The Aptilo WiMAX CSN System works hand-in-hand with the Samsung ASN Gateway to provide state-of-the-art prepaid and policy control and is integrated with a system from AvaBill for post-paid billing.

For this new network, company officials said that WIND Telecom will integrate the Aptilo platform with a portal solution developed in-house and is currently looking to use an OTA/OMA-DM system for provisioning and lifecycle management of devices, enabled by Aptilo's native support for third-party systems.

WIND Telecom is also utilizing the Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities in the Aptilo WiMAX CSN System by offering Wi-Fi services to hotels in the Dominican Republic.

"With the flexibility to integrate with literally any ASN vendor of choice, Aptilo Networks (News - Alert) has helped us aggressively expand our WiMAX service," said Manuel E. Bonilla, CEO, WIND Telecom, in a statement.

Bonilla said that Aptilo's solutions also helped the company stay one-step ahead by enabling to leverage Wi-Fi as an additional revenue-generating business model.

"WIND Telecom is a perfect example that Aptilo's value proposition works, starting with our pre-integrated solution for fast-track deployments while keeping the flexibility to integrate with 3rd party systems and other access technologies when required," said Torbjorn Ward, CEO, Aptilo Networks.

"It's gratifying to see that we are able to enable and support our customers through their continuous business and technology evolution, including a large-scale transition to a new radio vendor such as what's happening with WIND Telecom," said Ward.
