Today at Carrier Ethernet World Congress, Actelis (News - Alert) Networks announced that it has shipped its one millionth Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) port to Colt, a leading information delivery platform in Europe. Actelis Networks has long been referred to as an innovator in the Ethernet and broadband solutions space, providing Ethernet over copper solutions that accelerate a number of areas for communications and IT service providers, so it’s no surprise that it has reached such heights in its notable number of Ethernet deployments.
Although the announcement was just made, Actelis Networks has a longstanding relationship with Colt as the company actually began strengthening its European presence by deploying EFM access capabilities with Actelis’ EFM
plus™ technology back in 2007.
When Colt began utilizing Actelis’ Ethernet access devices, the company already had an extensive pan European ATM-based network in place allowing Colt to support business needs through integrated computing and network services delivered over EFM access. By leveraging Actelis’ broadband solutions,Colt was able to expand its portfolio with its European EFM deployments enabling high-speed and scalable bandwidth over copper to its large base of SMBs and major enterprises.
“As valued customers like Colt continue to drive the migration from legacy E1 lines and slower, ‘barely broadband’ DSL services to Ethernet-based broadband services, they require field-proven and cost-effective EFM solutions that seamlessly integrate into their existing networks,” said Joe Manuele, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Customer Support at Actelis. “This mantra is at the heart of Actelis’ mission. Our Carrier Ethernet solutions allow operators to focus on what’s important; creating and delivering new services that give them competitive advantages in the marketplace and generate new revenue streams.”
Today, EFM presents a smart complement to fiber or traditional DSL in 12 countries of Colt’s 35,000 km network infrastructure connecting more than 100 European cities. The company can deliver networking and IT Managed Services solutions with bandwidth over copper up to 40Mbps, delivering clear improvements in speed, reach and reliability over traditional DSL, according to Actelis officials.
Colt originally chose to partner with Actelis in 2007 due to the company’s ability to work closely with COLT (News - Alert) as a partner advancing the business case for EFM. In order for Colt to fully deploy wide-scale Ethernet services, Actelis’ physical layer one and two capabilities substantially assisted Colt in relaxing restrictions across Europe and delivering bandwidth that is often times in excess of currently regulated broadband rates.
“Actelis’ impressive physical layer capabilities exploit the full bandwidth capability of every copper pair, and also ensure there is spectral compatibility between multiple services that may be running in the bundle,” said Luke Broome, Chief Technology Officer at Colt. “Because of these innovations, Actelis paved the way for Colt to deliver further integrated services across our information delivery platform. We are very pleased to celebrate this important milestone with our valued business partner.”
