Central and northeast Wisconsin, and Upper Michigan have Cellcom to thank for most of its wireless services. When it was time to get with the 4G/LTE (News - Alert) evolution, Cellcom needed to look at how to better deploy its Femtocell convergence solution.

Enter Taqua, whose small cell core allowed Cellcom to bolster its fixed mobile convergence offerings and enable voice and messaging services to the areas Cellcom (News - Alert) covered.

Fixed mobile convergence (FMC) has made an impact in telecommunications with valuable service differentiation. With small cell deployments, data off-load requirements, networking capacity challenges and in-building coverage, issues can be addressed.

For Cellcom, Taqua’s small cell core – specifically Taqua’s TCS6100 Convergence (News - Alert) Server, T7100 Multimedia Controller and the T7000 Intelligent Switching System with mobile interface cards – enhances subscriber services, offering new FMC services for both residential and business customers.

“Choosing a flexible small cell core with proven reliability and scalability was paramount in our decision to go with Taqua (News - Alert),” said Rob Riordan, executive vice president and director of corporate development at Cellcom and Nsight.

Mobile operators can achieve a capacity boost from LTE small cells, cutting costs and complexity by co-locating and combining them with WiFi access points. The integration of WiFi and LTE small cells within the cellular core also helps operators optimize network use across the radio access network. This all leads to better performance.

In-Stat (News - Alert) estimates that by 2015, worldwide shipments of small cell equipment will reach $14 billion with outdoor metrocell shipments realizing a compound annual growth rate of 248 percent over the next five years.

Solutions that help overcome the challenges of network application will ultimately benefit both operators and subscribers. For Cellcom, Taqua was that solution.

“Taqua’s femtocell convergence software is a market leader that has proven to be highly scalable with other tier-1 carrier deployments. We look forward to working with Taqua to enhance our subscriber’s services and explore additional small cell opportunities,” said Riordan.
