"Smart Intersection" Introduced for Improved Safety and Mobility of City's Surface Transportation System

Aug 06, 2010 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- he installation uses Kapsch 5.9 GHz DSRC technology on the roadside, at the intersection of N. Shiawassee Street and King Street in the city of Owosso, and inside the "smart" vehicle equipped with DGE's Vehicle IntelliDrive Module. The SPAT information from the traffic light controller is sent wirelessly via 5.9 GHz DSRC. It is used by the on-board device to provide the driver of a vehicle approaching a traffic light with a red light warning advisory, or a recommended "green speed" advisory, for safe passage through the intersection.

"We are moving into a new era of intelligent transportation, where intelligent infrastructure provides information directly to vehicles, for the purpose of making the transportation system safer, more efficient, and more enjoyable," said Mayor Ben Frederick. "Owosso recognizes the importance of traffic safety, and we envision working with our citizens for expanded use and feedback on the installation." The intersection provides interoperable wireless communication, between vehicles and the traffic signal, to enable safe and efficient vehicle operation. Smart cars can use the information about the traffic signal phase, as well as their own position in relationship to the intersection, to prevent auto accidents and to provide driver advisories.

Paul Heimnick, a member of Owosso Friends and Neighbors Association ("OFANS"), a citizens group formed in 2007 for the purpose of carrying out community improvement projects, is demonstrating the Kapsch and DGE technologies to area residents. OFANS is also collecting feedback from area residents about how to further expand the use, and the convenience, of the system.
