GSMA Development Fund Renamed 'GSMA Mobile for Development'

The GSMA recently announced that its GSMA Development Fund is to be renamed "GSMA Mobile for Development." Furthermore, Dr. Nasser Marafih, CEO of Qtel Group, has been appointed chairman of the board for the newly renamed GSMA Mobile for Development Foundation, formerly named GSMA Foundation. This foundation promotes the work of GSMA Mobile for Development with the international development community, while brokering and managing public-private partnerships.

"The new name more clearly reflects our mission to put relevant, impactful services into the hands of underserved people and is more indicative of the evolving role of mobile as a key tool enabling positive social and economic change," said Chris Locke, managing director of GSMA Mobile for Development.

Adding, "Through its ubiquity, mobile is the predominant infrastructure in emerging markets and the GSMA's Mobile for Development programme will continue to bring together mobile operators, the wider mobile industry and the development community to drive commercial mobile services for underserved people in emerging markets."

Since its inception, the GSMA Development Fund has partnered with 35 mobile operators across a number of programs, rolling out 53 services in 30 countries. It has also identified opportunities for social, economic and environmental impact, helping to stimulate the development of scalable, life-enhancing mobile services through programs like Community Power from Mobile, Green Power for Mobile, Mobile Money for the Unbanked (MMU) and mWomen.

In June, the GSMA announced the launch of a new initiative meant to provide consumers with greater visibility of their roaming charges and overall mobile data service usage when travelling abroad. Operator groups such as AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, MTS and Telefonica, to name a few, agreed to undertake measures set forth by the initiative aimed to provide consumers with a better understanding of their data usage.

More recently, the GSMA announced details of the 2013 GSMA Mobile World Congress, to be held in Fira Gran Via in Barcelona. The theme for the event will be 'The New Mobile Horizon.'
