Infrax Systems, a provider of unified Smart Grid-related products and services for the Energy and Utility industries, announced the launch of its upgradeable WiMAX/LTE (News - Alert) base station.

Operators will benefit from this new base station as it allows network operators and service providers to utilize 1.4-1.6 GHz frequencies.

With these new base stations, operators can have better rural broadband networks range than the typical 2.5 or 3.5 GHz WiMAX (News - Alert). These new base stations can also be upgraded from WiMAX (802.16e) to Long Term Evolution (LTE) via firmware, according to a press release.

The other advantage is that these modular 4G base stations will offer the ability to change to a different frequency by changing radio modules to provide more longevity of the platform and protect network operator's investments.

Investments in broadband ventures are happening in the U.S. market with the aim of increasing access and improving business conditions. Recently, the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act appropriated $7.2 billion for the Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service and the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications Information Administration to expand broadband access.

Infraxinc's wireless products are a core component of the Automated Metering and Substation Automation projects for utilities. These products have a broad application range. These new WiMAX / LTE base stations can now be used in different frequency ranges, such as 2.3-2.6 GHz, 3.3-3.8 GHz as well the 1.4-1.6 GHz.

Utilities and wireless operators are in the process of rolling out applications requiring greater throughput and increased reliability. The company’s modular and scalable product line offers high performance, efficient, broadband wireless networks with the lowest OPEX (News - Alert) and CAPEX in the industry.

Recently, Infrax Systems announced that the company has delivered the wireless broadband infrastructure to the Island of Bermuda. The deployment is under way to enhance security and communication measures.
