ABI Research has
developed an analytical tool called The Vendor Matrix for providing a comprehensible understanding of vendors’ positions in their specific markets.
The assessment is based on the important parameters of “innovation” and “implementation” across several criteria distinctive to each vendor matrix.
The latest released Vendor Matrix has ranked Samsung at the number one position, followed by Motorola and Alvarion (
News -
Alert) on the second and third positions respectively. This latest evaluation conducted by ABI Research was of the worldwide WiMAX base station vendors.
In a release Mr. Xavier Ortiz, research analyst at ABI Research said that “Samsung and Motorola (
News -
Alert) have maintained the respective market leadership positions they established in our 2008 Matrix. This year, they ranked very close to one another. Each has a decent amount of R&D invested in this area, as well as comprehensive 802.16 patent portfolios. Mr. Xavier further added “Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco (
News -
Alert), Nortel, and Nokia Siemens Networks have all exited the market since 2008, for differing reasons. The result: Alvarion, previously ranked eighth, has risen to take third position as it has gained contracts, and partnered with some of the vendors who left the market. Huawei (
News -
Alert) has also become a major player, when it wasn’t even a significant part of the lineup two years ago, by gaining substantial business with Clearwire.”
In this particular vendor matrix, the vendors’ were examined for their early product development for mobile WiMAX (
News -
Alert), their end-to-end telecom product offerings, and their intellectual property holdings for OFDMA, MIMO and beamforming, under the “innovation” category, by ABI Research. Other Innovation factors which were considered were the companies’ verified commitments to 802.16m, along with the number of 802.16m trials under process.
Under the “implementation” category, vendors were examined on their market share and major customer wins; the number of trials acquired; the degree of the vendors’ focus on high-growth developing countries, followed by their partnerships with other companies in the mobile WiMAX ecosystem.
ABI Research is a research firm which provides in-depth analysis and quantitative forecasting of trends in global connectivity and other emerging technologies. ABI Research was established in 1990, and its offices are spread all over North America, Europe and Asia.
