Gemtek asserted that it was able to build a LTE (News - Alert) USB modem on its own by leveraging Sequans’ second-generation LTE semiconductor technology and is going to debut its new device in the TD-LTE markets of India, Latin America, Middle East, and Asia.

4G chipmaker Sequans and Gemtek (News - Alert), a provider of broadband wireless solutions, entered into a partnership recently to speed new LTE consumer devices to market and as per the agreement, Gemtek was allowed to utilize Sequans’ LTE UE chip to develop several new devices including a compact USB dongle and a desktop CPE. The new LTE USB modem makes use of Sequans’ SQN3120 LTE baseband chip and SQN3140 companion RF chip.

According to Sequans, the SQN3120 is a slim and powerful LTE baseband and a applications processor chip, part of Sequans’ Mont Blanc platform which comprises of baseband and RF chips supporting global LTE networks, FDD or TDD, reference designs, and comprehensive software. The SQN3120 is claimed to be the most compact and cost-effective solution for adding LTE connectivity to 4G mobile hotspot, CPE, and USB dongle applications and can be deployed in a standalone 4G solution or alongside a 3G subsystem.

The SQN3140 RF chip on the other hand is an integrated, direct conversion RF solution based on CMOS process technology and can be integrated with Sequans’ LTE baseband chips to provide a complete baseband plus RF solution for numerous LTE device applications.

Gemtek stated that the SQN3120 LTE chip is highly efficient and flexible and it was an essential ingredient in building such a highly differentiated product as its new High Gain LTE USB modem. With the chip, Gemtek was able to embed LTE into its design affordably and smoothly and customize its products to support multiple bands and regions as desired.
