Presidents: Turkmen-Russian cooperation obtains strategic character


Sep 05, 2011 (Trend News Agency - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan -- Turkmen and Russian Presidents Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Dmitry Medvedev recently met in Dushanbe during the CIS summit. They stressed that Turkmen-Russian cooperation originally obtained a strategic character, Turkmen media reported on Monday.



Information says the interlocutors stressed a high level inter-state dialogue, which is developing successfully in both bilateral and multilateral formats, as well as within regional and international organizations, in particular the CIS.

The Russian President wished Turkmenistan success as the country approaches its chairmanship of the CIS in 2012.


President Berdimuhamedov said that as a CIS associate member , Turkmenistan considers its forthcoming chairmanship in the Commonwealth as part of a new phase for the country's positive regional cooperation .

The president stressed the intention of Ashgabat to officially further promote the comprehensive development of a constructive partnership in the CIS.

The Presidents also discussed prospects of a mutually advantageous partnership in all spheres.

Turkmenistan- 4 national TV channel reported that interlocutors stressed the presence of the most favorable opportunities to further intensify and diversify trade and an economic partnership .

The report stressed that some well-known Russian companies, seeking to expand their presence in the promising Turkmen market, operate in the country successfully.

Turkmenistan has recently intensified interaction with the Republic of Tatarstan , the Astrakhan Oblast, and St. Petersburg.

The two countries have established an intergovernmental commission .

Russian "Gazprom " was the main buyer of Turkmen gas before the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline was commissioned in 2009.

T he Russian company "Zarubezhneft " has become the operator of a multi-billion project to develop the "21 block" in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea.
