STMicroelectronics Exhibits Industry-Leading 'Smart-Life' Solutions at i-SEDEX 2014

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 15 October 2014 Release date- 14102014 - ST Booth #2701 Hall 1, KINTEX, Korea, October 14-16 2014 - STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a global semiconductor leader serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, is demonstrating its 'smart-life' solutions at i-SEDEX 2014, at KINTEX, Korea, October 14-16.

Visitors to ST's booth at i-SEDEX will experience a range of advanced technologies and solutions targeting applications in six 'smart-life' segments: Smart Brain, Smart Sensing, Smart Power, Smart Lighting, Smart Motor Control, and Smart Meter.

The Smart Brain zone will highlight ST's newest and most powerful STM32 microcontroller series, STM32 F7, including a benchmark demonstration showing the performance between the STM32 F4 and F7 devices. A dedicated section at the booth will showcase easy code generation using the STM32 CubeMX software platform, introduced earlier this year, that makes designing with STM32 microcontrollers easier, faster, and more accessible. Visitors can also play Anki Drive racing game, in which miniature cars powered by the STM32F0 microcontrollers efficiently process the data transmitted on the track and respond in real time.

In Smart Sensing, ST will show how sensors play a key role in enabling various smart-life scenarios. As a longtime leader in sensors and Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, ST will demonstrate at its booth tablet-based monitoring of environmental contexts using energy-harvesting sensor nodes that measure temperature and humidity, and transfer the data through sub-1GHz wireless communication. This solution brings new opportunities for smart-home, smart-building, and smart-agriculture applications. Driving the booming wearable-technology trend, ST exhibits at i-SEDEX a wristwatch-style optical heart-rate monitoring demo. The demonstration shows a wrist-facing LED on the backside of the wearable device that flashes and uses a photodiode and microcontroller to measure light reflected from the wearer's flowing blood to determine heart rate.

With the expansion of the mobile, loT, and wearable markets, Smart Power solutions gain importance. Demonstrated at i-SEDEX, ST's wireless charging solution for multiple platforms supports different standards and substandards, developed by Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and Power Matters Alliance (PMA). ST's digital power-controller IC, which integrates a microprocessor core and peripheral circuits for power-supply control, contributes to reduced bill-of-materials costs by meeting all Qi1 specifications (A1, A11, and A13) in a single chip. ST will also demonstrate USB charging for mobile devices using the new controller IC compliant with the new USB Power Delivery (USB PD) specification developed to enable USB-based power supplies for electronic devices with higher power consumption, including laptop PCs and displays. Other demos include digital SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) and battery-recharging solutions.

In Smart Lighting, ST will demonstrate remote control of indoor and outdoor LED lighting through a network. The Company's solutions for room lighting combine PFC controller ICs, LED controller ICs, 8-bit microcontrollers, and Bluetooth communication ICs to enable tablet-based room-light intensity control. ST's solutions for outdoor lighting integrate digital power-controller ICs, 32-bit microcontrollers, and sub-1GHz wireless transceiver ICs, with lighting intensity controlled by a touchscreen-equipped development board for a 32-bit microcontroller as a home gateway. ST will also display a fully digital HID (High-Intensity Discharge) solution with PLM system for the HID Lighting market.

In Smart Motor Control, ST will display a multi-motor driver solution for applications that require high-precision motor control. ST's 3D printer solution demo integrates a 32-bit microcontroller and 3 motor drivers, digital-power source solutions that improve the power efficiency of AC adapters and switched-mode power supplies, and an NFC communication IC. The 3D printer demo draws the design patterns based on the information transmitted from an NFC-enabled mobile device.

In Smart Meter, ST will demonstrate its latest high-precision digital-metering IC. The device prevents billing losses by keeping the meter accuracy down to just a few milliamps. Also, the device helps utilities to reduce cost by performing power-quality calculations on-chip to offload the meter's host processor and simplify processor's software.
