Trilithic's Seeker BB-2 Provides Automated Cable TV Leak Detection

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Are you looking for leakage detection that is automatic, invisible and hands-free, operating in the background while your techs drive their routes without not needing any operator interaction? Just a “set and forget” tool that improves the efficiency of your leakage detection operations by eliminating operator interaction?

We might have your answer here. Check out the Trilithic Seeker BB-2 communication test equipment. Company officials describe it as “an automated GPS-based Cable TV leak detection system, totally automatic, requiring no operator interaction.”

Company officials say it will help with drive-outs, leak documentation and troubleshooting, as it sports all-vehicle electronics housed in a tough aluminum enclosure. It offers leakage record upload via Wi-Fi or Internet to LAW central server application, rendering it cost-effective.

Because it’s housed in a heavy-gauge sheet aluminum enclosure, the Seeker BB-2 can be “tucked away into any convenient location in the vehicle,” company officials say, “such as under a seat or behind the driver,” and the system uses a monopole antenna to monitor leaks wherever a vehicle goes, and stores the data and uploads it automatically to Trilithic's LAW (Leakage Analysis Workshop) server via a built-in WiFi (News - Alert) adaptor when the vehicle is near a designated Wi-Fi hot spot.

Another advantage is that while the tech is driving to a location or to work, the Seeker BB-2 automatically monitors leakage strength every second the vehicle is in motion, “labeling each measurement with time and date and the leak's GPS location,” company officials say, adding that this means “the driver doesn't need to adjust the unit for different distances from a distribution line, or interact with it in any way.”

Earlier this month TMC (News - Alert) reported that Trilithic is featuring its RSA series rotary attenuators for measuring precise signal level control.

The product comes with a wide frequency range, high accuracy rate, low VSWR and what company officials say is a competitive price. It also comes with the sort of flexible design configurations you’d expect from a product of this caliber.

The way Trilithic officials describe it, the series is divided into both 50 and 75 Ohm units with attenuation as high as 110 dB dynamic range (in 10 dB steps), or as low as 1 dB range (in 0.1 dB steps): “A firm, snap action detent locks in the desired attenuation as indicated on the supplied control knob. Low VSWR and insertion loss is assured throughout the range of each unit with tightly controlled pad values and machining tolerances.”
