By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Officials of Wind River (News - Alert), which sells embedded and mobile software, have announced that the company has been named the multi-core market leader for the second consecutive year by VDC Research Group (News - Alert).

Wind River placed first in the market for multi-core components and tools in 2010, according to VDC’s 2011 ‘Multi-core Components & Tools” report.

“The embedded market continues to evolve, with OEMs increasingly in need of new technologies and expertise in order to adapt to the mounting complexities and requirements of embedded devices,” said Jared Weiner, analyst at VDC Research Group.

In addition to its multi-core enablement acknowledgement, Wind River also achieved top honors in VDC’s 2011 “Embedded Software Engineering Market Technologies & Statistics” report series in the following categories:

Embedded/Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS). For this one, Wind River was named the traditional real-time operating system market leader for its portfolio of products and services for the second consecutive year. The report citled it’s VxWorks RTOS, noting that the company accounted for 40 percent of total market revenue in 2010.

Android (News - Alert) & Linux in the Embedded Systems Market. For the third consecutive year Wind River was recognized as the embedded Linux market leader. The vendor controlled over 30 percent of total market revenue in 2010.

Virtualization for Mobile and Embedded Systems. Wind River was recognized for having the largest slice of the global market in 2010, more than 30 percent, for what company officials described as “commercially available virtualization technologies that enable multiple operating systems to run simultaneously on a single or multi-core processor.”

The company continues to generate news, as also this week TMC (News - Alert) had the news that Wind River is collaborating with Infineon Technologies as part of a multi-year partnership to extend its integrated software tools portfolio by optimizing Wind River Diab Compiler for the TriCore microcontroller architecture of Infineon Technologies (News - Alert), including the latest AUDO MAX and future TriCore families.

Wind River has released an update to Wind River Diab Compiler that includes enhancements for TriCore architecture resulting in increased performance and smaller software footprint for TriCore developers.

Infineon TriCore 32-bit microcontrollers provide high performance and real-time capabilities and are widely used for compute-intensive automotive applications such as power train, passive safety systems, engine control, energy management, and chassis control.
