Obama campaign opens Springfield office

SPRINGFIELD, Jul 11, 2012 (Springfield News-Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- About 300 Barack Obama campaign volunteers and supporters gathered Tuesday evening to celebrate the grand opening of its Springfield campaign office.

The office at 1214 Bechtle Ave. is one of 33 other Obama for America-Ohio field offices opened across the state, including those nearby in Troy, Beavercreek and Dayton. More are expected to open later this year.

The Springfield location will serve as a community hub for 2012 election activities.

The openings are the latest steps in building the incumbent president's campaign infrastructure leading up to the Nov. 6 election, campaign officials said.

Volunteers in Clark County have already been active in his re-election campaign through canvassing, phone bank staffing and voter sign-up, several volunteers told the Springfield News-Sun at the event.

"We started in 2008, just after he was elected," said Roxandra Antoniadis. Antoniadis, a former professor at Miami University who operates an art advisory service out of her Springfield home.

She was out on Sunday registering and talking to voters, some she said were discouraged.

"We talked to them and said, 'Listen, you can't lose hope now,' " she said. "And so we just wanted to say, 'This is what we're here for, to keep that grassroots organization and enthusiasm going and that energy that we have here in Clark County." She said the office hours will vary, but will operate seven days a week.

The 2008 Obama campaign also had a Springfield office, according to Jason Pitt, regional press secretary.

Obama then lost Clark County to John McCain by 2.5 percent of the votes, according to the Clark County Board of Elections website.

A spokesman for the Romney for President campaign could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

The Clark County Republicans expect to open their headquarters Aug. 1 for campaign purposes, but further details were not available Tuesday, Chairman of Executive Committee Lynda Smith said.
