The Motorola (News - Alert) Solutions business of Motorola, Inc., a global provider of telecommunications solutions and services, introduced WMX 5.0, the fifth generation of WiMAX (News - Alert) software that will enable the operators to extend their existing WiMAX networks without having to buy new hardware. Leveraging the new software-only upgrade by Motorola, its WiMAX solution offers a number of capacity enhancements to the operator networks, and helps them support industry various standard features which improve operators return on investment.

Motorola’s WMX 5.0 has been built on a legacy of quality software solutions, and helps the operators to enhance the capacity of a WiMAX network to enjoy improved wireless data, mobile broadband and voice access, without having to bear the costs associated with purchasing new hardware. The version 5.0 of the solution includes an Enhanced Multi Carrier feature, which enables the carriers to increase site capacity without the loss of any coverage. It supports the Networking Working Group R6, so that Motorola access points are able to inter-operate within networks that deploy third-party Access Service Network Gateway.

As an industry software platform that supports features targeting the WiMAX Forum (News - Alert) Open Retail Certification Initiative requirements, Motorola’s WMX 5.0 software assures that the end-user devices can be sold to consumers across any retail channel, and can also be activated without any support from service providers. Telecom operators will be able to get the new release of the solution in the first quarter of 2011.

According to Fred Gabbard, VP of Product Management at Motorola Solutions, the introduction of Motorola’s WiMAX WMX 5.0 demonstrates company’s commitment to providing operators with the resources they need to improve their network service without the hassle and added capital cost of purchasing new equipment. Gabbard noted that by using this solution, Motorola is easing customers’ paths toward building faster and greater capacity networks so that end users can have the mobile device data speed and voice quality they desire to do business in this fast pace world.

In June 2010, Motorola unveiled a new cost-effective single Radio Access Network or ‘RAN’ solution that has the ability to enable WiMAX evolution. Using the new solution, operators can upgrade existing WiMAX 802.16e / 802.16e enhanced networks to 802.16m or TD-LTE (News - Alert) or to add LTE to their existing WiMAX networks. Company’s enhanced WiMAX offering has been customized for rapidly spreading 4G networks, and is based on a single RAN solution that supports existing technology and provides operators with a cost-effective way to upgrade their network offerings.
