The mission of 4G Africa is to provide broadband wireless internet access services in chosen countries in sub-Saharan Africa, in order to help close the digital divide. To help it achieve this, 4G Africa has chosen Alvarion, a provider of 4G networks in the broadband wireless access market to deploy the first Mobile WiMAX (News - Alert) network in Cameroon.

Two of Cameroon's largest metropolitan areas, the cities of Douala and Yaounde, are going to be the beneficiaries of this deployment. About five million people stand to gain from Alvarion's (News - Alert) end-to-end Mobile WiMAX 4Motion solution at the 2.5 GHz frequency band.

Within the first year, over 10,000 users will be provided with connectivity and 4G WiMAX will enable mobile broadband to mass consumers. A network built based on Alvarion's platform will offer data services to the users in Cameroon.

"We are excited to work with Alvarion on the first 4G network deployment in Cameroon and introduce a new era of communications to the residents of Douala and Yaounde," Dov Bar-Gera, CEO of 4G Africa, said, adding that 4G Africa was focused on establishing WiMAX networks in emerging Sub-Saharan countries, such as Cameroon with the overall aim to reduce the digital divide. He further added that by leveraging Alvarion's technology and expertise, 4G would be in a position to provide a high-quality network, offering valuable broadband services to the residents.

Eran Gorev, president and CEO of Alvarion was delighted at the prospect of helping 4G Africa to bridge the digital divide in Sub-Sahara Africa, and provide residents with the benefits of a complete wireless broadband experience.

4G Africa is an innovative company, founded by a team of telecom entrepreneurs who have been actively involved in emerging countries for the last decade. Together they possess broad experience in establishing broadband wireless and mobile networks. In 2011, the company will start offering wireless and different value added services in Cameroon.

Alvarion is a global 4G communications leader with the industry’s most extensive customer base, including hundreds of commercial 4G deployments. Alvarion’s industry leading network solutions for broadband wireless technologies WiMAX, TD-LTE (News - Alert) and WiFi, enable broadband applications for service providers and enterprises over a large spectrum of industry.

In a related news release, KeyOn (News - Alert) Communications Holdings, Inc., one of the largest providers of wireless broadband, satellite video and voice over Internet protocol services in the United States, announced that it has selected Alvarion Ltd. as its next-generation, 4G wireless equipment supplier for its statewide network that will connect rural communities throughout Nevada
