Barrett Xplore Opts for Tellabs SmartCore 9160 Platform

Barrett Xplore Inc. announced it has selected Tellabs to power its national 4G wireless broadband network. The company, by the end of 2012, will be able to deliver affordable, reliable wireless broadband to every rural Canadian.

Tellabs (News - Alert) SmartCore 9160 platform has been chosen by Barrett Xplore to ensure subscribers have high quality of service, to intelligently manage IP traffic and capacity as demand for services grows.

Through a combination of terrestrial wireless and satellite networks, Barrett will launch the country's first national 4G network. Marketed under the Xplornet brand, the terrestrial 4G wireless network will initially be based on WiMAX (News - Alert) and will be software-upgradable to LTE.

Xplornet customers, with the help of Tellabs' technology will be linked to the Internet by authenticating each individual user and assigning network resources according to the customer's selected package. To enable Barrett to maximize its investment and a flexible, open network architecture to support future growth, the Tellabs platform provides advanced analytics and monetization tools. In addition to this, Tellabs is also providing network design and integration services to help Barrett prepare for the network launch.

"We confidently selected Tellabs because the enhanced service and traffic management capabilities of Tellabs SmartCore 9100 platform will help us realize the goal of an urban-quality broadband experience for rural Canadians, and will position us for seamless movement to LTE (News - Alert) in the future."

In related news, Barrett Xplore Inc., Canada's leading rural broadband provider, has selected Ciena’s ActivEdge 3920 Service Delivery Switch for high-performance Ethernet backhaul architecture in the first national 4G network in Canada.
