Funambol DM Carrier Edition, the world's first commercial open source device management solution for WiMAX (News - Alert), has been introduced by Funambol, the open source mobile cloud sync company.

The solution, developed with Clearwire (News - Alert), the WiMAX leader, makes it faster, easier and cheaper to wirelessly manage WiMAX devices.

The OMA DM 1.2 standard is implemented by Funambol DM Carrier Edition. The solution also automates bootstrap, configuration, setup, provisioning, monitoring, Firmware over-the-air updates, lock-down and erase, and reporting.

Funambol (News - Alert) DM Carrier Edition implements Device Reported Measurements and Diagnostics, the new standard for WiMAX diagnostics and reporting, and is based on open source, for full customizability.

For customers, the solution can be deployed on-premises or hosted in the cloud by Funambol.

"4G WiMAX offers much faster wireless broadband," Fabrizio Capobianco (News - Alert), Funambol CEO, said. "Device management is required to enable WiMAX devices to sustain high performance. Our solution provides 4G mobile operators and device manufacturers with the ability to perform a full range of device management tasks, everything from set-up and provisioning, to diagnostics and updates. The system is scalable, flexible and can be fully customized. Customer support, network and operational functions will become much more cost-effective as a result of implementation."

Millions of data-centric devices are proliferating on WiMAX networks, such as WiFi routers, 4G dongles and smartphones.

To increase quality of service and to reduce operational and support costs, WiMAX operators and device makers are looking to automate FOTA updates and other device management functions.

Funambol DM Carrier Edition, an end-to-end DM solution, consists of a server and a client for WiMAX devices today and LTE (News - Alert) shortly. Built on the foundation of the open source Funambol DM Server, the server is optimized for 4G operational challenges in an all-IP network. For network QoS support, the client supports multiple network profiles and DRMD diagnostics.

In related news, BlueTie, a provider of hosted e-mail and Software-as-a-Service, has selected Funambol’s push e-mail and mobile cloud sync solution.
