Direct On PC Limited, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) in West Africa, selected Aviat Networks’ StarMAX WiMAX Broadband system including base stations, Wireless Services Gateway (News - Alert) (WSG) and end-user devices to provide broadband services to underserved areas of Nigeria.

Officials with Aviat Networks said that the company’s high-performance WiMAX (News - Alert) system allows service providers to offer numerous configuration options and services including pre-paid or post-paid accounts and secure VLAN services for enterprise and small business customers all from the same wireless network. This allows each network component to be fully utilized to maximize revenue while maintaining the flexibility to scale up capacity and coverage as necessary.

According to company officials, the wireless infrastructure equipment and services contract includes approximately 200 base station locations. Initially, this equipment will be deployed throughout Lagos, the largest city in Nigeria and second largest in Africa. Subsequent installations will occur in Abuja, the national capital, and Port Harcourt, the primary Nigerian port and also one of Nigeria's largest cities.

"We have developed a strong reputation delivering the best broadband experience for our personal and business customers," said Mahesh Sadhwani, vice chairman with Direct On PC, in a statement.

"With Aviat (News - Alert) Networks' comprehensive worldwide experience in deploying wireless solutions and substantial local presence in Nigeria, we know the company will be a strong partner to help rapidly meet the demands of our growing market," said Sadhwani.

Trevor Burchell, vice president sales and service, Africa Region with Aviat Networks said that Aviat Networks is very excited to work with Direct On PC.

Burchell said that as Nigeria is one of the fastest growing telecom markets in the world, together two companies have designed a solution that not only fulfills all current end customer expectations but also scales to meet capacity needs for future growth and applications.

Aviat Networks, Inc., previously known as Harris Stratex Networks, Inc., is a wireless expert in advanced IP network migration, building the foundation for the 4G/LTE (News - Alert) broadband future.
