Sprint Test Drives WiMAX in Major Cities Across the U.S.

Not long after the announcement of their 4G HTC (News - Alert) Evo, Sprint users are now finding they are able to access WiMAX on their new phones in some major cities across the country, according to a report by Gizmodo.

Places like San Francisco, L.A. and the five boroughs can reportedly access the network and even transmit data with their Evos.

Simon Sage of Into Mobile said this indicates Sprint (News - Alert) may be planning to make the 4G network fully accessible soon, as it appears to be a trial run. However, the network is nowhere near a stable connection and definitely not widespread, Sage said.

According to Engadget, Sprint is most likely trying to work out some kinks before the big debut. The undulating terrain of New York and California alike will prove to make this a challenge for the 4G pioneers, but it appears they are off to a good start.

Recently, TMCnet editor Marisa Torrieri reported that Sprint took note of AT&T and followed suit with a mobile data cap. It is also rumored that T-Mobile (News - Alert) will join them in the effort to limit mobile data usage in order to improve network function for its existing customers.

After all, issues like interference and dropped calls are only growing as mobile data usage explodes. That’s why more and more Tier 1 operators are instituting action plans that make a lot of sense,” said Torrieri. This can only improve things for the company, especially with the thousands of people that will soon be joining the network.

Sprint’s HTC Evo 4G was released on June 4 and is priced at $199.99 with a 2-year contract (after a $100 mail-in rebate). The phone is currently back in stock as of 11am Thursday after being sold out for the second time, according to this tech site.
