Open source push email and mobile sync provider Funambol has announced the launch of Funambol (News - Alert) DM Carrier Edition, the world's first commercial open source device management solution for WiMAX. Developed in conjunction with Clearwire, the solution facilitates the management of WiMAX devices wirelessly.

More and more data-centric WiMAX devices such as WiFi (News - Alert) routers, 4G dongles and smartphones are being used on WiMAX networks. However, due to the complexity of these devices WiMAX operators and device makers look for solutions that can automate Firmware over-the-air updates and other device management functions. This not only increases quality of service but also trims operational and support costs.

Funambol DM Carrier Edition implements the OMA DM 1.2 standard and automates bootstrap, configuration, setup, provisioning, monitoring,  FOTA  updates, lock-down and erase, and reporting. In addition, the solution implements Device Reported Measurements and Diagnostics, the new standard for WiMAX diagnostics and reporting. The solution can be deployed on-premises or hosted in the cloud by Funambol for customers.

"4G WiMAX offers much faster wireless broadband," said Fabrizio Capobianco (News - Alert), Funambol CEO. "Device management is required to enable WiMAX devices to sustain high performance. Our solution provides 4G mobile operators and device manufacturers with the ability to perform a full range of device management tasks, everything from set-up and provisioning, to diagnostics and updates. The system is scalable, flexible and can be fully customized. Customer support, network and operational functions will become much more cost-effective as a result of implementation."

A comprehensive solution, the Funambol DM Carrier Edition encompasses a server and a client for WiMAX devices. Support for LTE (News - Alert) will soon be introduced. The server is built on the foundation of the open source Funambol DM Server that is optimized for 4G operational challenges in an all-IP network. The client supports multiple network profiles (roaming) and DRMD diagnostics for network QoS support.

Redwood City, California based Funambol is a prominent cross-platform mobile open source project that offers open source software which has been downloaded 3 million times by 50,000 developers and project participants in 200 countries. The company’s clientele includes device manufacturers, operators, service and content providers, software companies and system integrators. In another article, TMCnet reported that Funambol and Clearwire (News - Alert) have also introduced the first ever open-source mobile device management solution for 4G devices.
